History

The lyrics to the Richmond Football Club Themesong was written in 1962, by Cabaret Singer Jack Malcomson.
Malcomson, a regular performer at the Richmond Football Club's Pleasant Sunday Mornings, was approached by Committeeman to Alf Barnett , to write the song, after the club embarassed themselves on a previous interstate trip, when they had no song to sing.

Officially, the themesong title is called 'Oh We're From Tigerland' and is written to the tune of 'Row , Row, Row '
Once written, Malcomson presented the lyrics and performed the song to the Richmond players and officials, prior to the Round 12 1962 match vs Melbourne @ Punt Road.

Lyrics

The lyrics are they were originally written , and sung were:

We're from Tigerland
A FIGHTING FURY
We're from Tigerland

In any weather
You will see us with a grin
Risking head & shin
If we're behind , then never mind
We'll FIGHT AND FIGHT AND WIN
For We're from TIgerland
We never weaken til the final
siren's gone
Like the TIGER of old
we're STRONG and we're bold
For we're from Tiger (Yellow & Black)
We're from Tigerland'

Since that version, there has been some slight changes to the song.
  • The word 'Oh' is sung to begin the song, when infact it never appeared in the original lyric.

  • The lyric 'Risking head & shin' has inadvertently been sung for several decades as 'Risking head and skin'.
It is worth noting the correct lyric is 'head & shin'.
